Fun and Unique Activities in Punta GordaEnjoy Fresh Seafood at Peace River Seafood

Have you ever heard the expression, "If I had a nickel for every time I ........, I would be rich."  Peace River Seafood in Punta Gorda has a fun tradition surrounding the phrase, only they use dollar bills. It all started with the staff commenting if they only had a dollar for every time they heard how good the food was from the customers.

The customers started giving the wait staff a dollar upon the retort and a trend was born. When you walk into the restaurant you will see dollar bills plastered all over the walls because the food really is that good.

Peace River Botanical and Sculpture Gardens

While you are on the shores of Peace River stop by the Botanical and Sculpture Gardens. This unique collection of artistic sculptures is sprinkled throughout a beautiful garden. Some of the sculptures will have you second-guessing because they look lifelike.

Check out the Murals

Speaking of art, you want to check out the fun and amazing murals around downtown. The Punta Gorda Historic Mural Society has a mission to beautify its buildings and to showcase the rich history of Punta Gorda. Take a mural tour and learn all about the beginnings of Punta Gorda.

Stop By the Jail

And speaking of history, you have to check out the old jail. This is a unique hidden gem landmark of the small town. This jail, when you see it, you will never know what it was unless you have already heard about it. This quirky Punta Gorda landmark is what looks like a couple of large iron cages in a fairly unseen portion of Historic Park.

In its first days, when Punta Gorda was named Trabue, the town was a home for rough cowboys and drunken fishermen. The founders decided something must be done about the raucous weekend behavior. The cage jail was purchased and used to lock up ruffians from 1889 to 1928.

If you go to see the "jail" on Sunday you can also enjoy the History Park Farmers Market.  The market is every Sunday from 9 am to 1 pm. Find the freshest local foods to take home and some unique locally-made goods. Get to know local vendors and chat with some of the locals.
